There was no specific inspiration for this paper cutout. I knew I wanted to make something based on distorted human anatomy (I was taking human anatomy classes in medical school at the time), so I started to improvise a drawing. I started by drawing eight large eyeballs equally spaced in a circle, then drew the heart in the middle. In order to make sure that the heart was oriented correctly when the cutout was completed, I had to draw the heart in reverse. I did this by first drawing the heart on a separate piece of paper and transferring it in reverse onto the cutout paper. From there, I filled in additional eyeballs and connected everything together with a web of blood vessels. I submitted this piece to the art show at my medical school where it won the viewer’s choice award and judges’ 1st place award.
